Welcome to the Ohlone College Faculty and Staff Service Learning Community wiki!

Who are we?

We are a group of faculty and staff across the disciplines that have come together in a learning community working on the following goals:

  1. Develop discipline specific ideas for service learning projects/ assignments that can be implemented in classes.
  2. Create and collect documents such as service learning verification forms for faculty to use and post them on-line for easy access.
  3. Collect and post student experiences/ testimonials about their service learning experience.
  4. Update and expand links on the Center for Civic and Community Engagement web page www.ohlone.edu/org/civicengagement/.

Don't know what service learning is...

“Service Learning is a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets a community need and (b) reflect on their service activity as a means of gaining a deeper understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, an enhanced sense of civic responsibility, and/or a greater interest in and understanding of community life.”

Adapted from: Bringle, R. & Hatcher, J. "A Service Learning Curriculum for Faculty." The Michigan Journal of Community Service-Learning, Fall 1995, pp 112-122;

The National and Community Service Act of 1990, which authorized the Learn and Serve America grant program, defines service-learning as:

"a method under which students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and helps foster civic responsibility; and that is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience."
